Fresco is a one of the many types of wall covering
From earliest times man has been decorating his buildings with pictures to enhance their looks. He has used many techniques to assist him and used many forms of wall covering to apply these techniques on.
One of the many types of wall covering is ‘Fresco’
‘Fresco’ is applying a number of different types of painting onto walls or ceilings. As the word fresco implies, it comes from the Italian word ‘affresco’ meaning fresh.
The ‘fresco’ wall covering technique is amongst one of the earliest forms of painting, being widely used during the Renaissance period and even before.
There are various techniques of ‘fresco’ painting. One is Buon Fresco, this is where watercolours are applied to plaster when it is still wet to form a softer looking wall covering.
Whereas another way ‘Secco Fresco’ is applied on dry plaster and requires a binding agent such as egg tempo, glue or oil. Usually ‘buon fresco’ is the more durable wall covering. A third type, called ‘mezzo-fresco’, is painted on nearly-dry so that the pigment only penetrates slightly into the plaster. Different methods are used depending on the wall covering surface.
We would probably see this type of wall covering when we visit old churches or historical buildings and is still widely used in modern buildings. We can only admire the craftsmanship and the sheer amazement at how it was achieved. If you can imagine lying on your back for months on end, 100ft in the air, on wobbly wooden scaffolding and then trying to envisage the overall image while you are 2ft from the painting surface. And still create a masterpiece.
