What can I do about my Cavalier King Charles Puppy?
We have a 12 week old cavalier king charles male puppy who is nipping, jumping up, barking and scratching everyone in the house!! Our 3 children aged 5, 3 and 6 months are nearly always scared to play with him, but he thinks they want to play with him. Puppy pre-school doesn't start for a few months but I need help NOW!! Having had the Cavalier experience, I can tell you that the first person that answered is right about treating them as though they are a 50 lb dog. As you've learned, they are high energy little things and they have a mind of their own.
A lot of people are going to just gasp at this, but it does work: get a remote control shock collar ~ be sure it is one that has a tone as well as different levels of shock.
When he begins an unwanted behavior give him a firm "NO!" (not a shout, just a very firm voice), a tone and then a shock. It shouldn't take but a very few shocks before he begins to realize it's about to be uncomfortable if he doesn't stop, just be certain that you give him the tone before the shock. After those first few shocks, try giving him a firm "NO!" and just the tone and see if you can stop the shocks. He should then stop the unwanted behavior when he hears the tone.
You will find that you will occasionally need to shock him again to remind him what the tone is all about. A shock collar can be a very good tool to quickly get an out of control dog in control; however, it can also be abused, so you want to carefully avoid that.

One of those 'Beggin' Strips,' broken into about 5 or 6 pieces, should do the job for each session. His attention span isn't going to last longer than that. Repeat this as many times a day as possible.
Most Cavaliers do, eventually, become more dignified, but their puppyhood is quite a ride! *L*

ADD ON: In response to the 2nd person who answered: please never use a crate as a punishment for a dog. Crate training is wonderful and gives a dog a great sense of security IF properly done. If used as any form of punishment, the dog is never going to know if he's been bad or not when he's crated for bedtime or so that one can leave the house for a couple of hours. Our dogs love their crates. They go there when they don't want to be bothered, when they're tired and grumpy, when it's bedtime, and so forth. But, they go on their own ... the crate doors are never shut now.
