The happy Cocker Spaniel requires daily excercise. With the proper daily exercise the Cocker can be content with apartment living. However, a backyard is ideal. This breed is great with kids and other pets, but can be difficult to housebreak and can bark a lot.

Caring for your Cocker Spaniel
Maintain the pups immunity to diseases by ensuring to get the dog vaccinated with yearly booster shots. Your veterinarian will be able to advise you on the proper products for your Cocker Spaniel to cover worming and flea control.
Feed your cocker spaniel high-grade dog food. Meat should always be the first ingredient. Check for crude protein levels of 30 percent or better. Crude fat should be no less than 20 percent. The fiber content needs to be 4 percent or less.
Early Socialization with people, children and pets is always good and your dog will be better for it. Socializing will help keep your dog from being shy and timid.
Walk your cocker spaniel daily, being careful not to let her walk through brush, as her coat can get tangled easily.
Consider crate training your cocker spaniel until she's housebroken. When you cannot supervise your puppy, put her in a crate that's just big enough for her to sleep and turn around in, so she won't go to the bathroom in it. Housebreaking means taking your dog out after it eats. Take the dog to the same place for this action. When your dog is done it should be followed with lots of praise.
The dog will enjoy a good brushing everyday. Good grooming includes a shampoo on a consistent basis. You can expect some shedding but at a minimal amount. Long coat Cocker need to be trimmed every four months or so.
Clean your cocker spaniel's eyes regularly with moist cotton wool pads. Avoid spreading any infections by cleaning each eye with a different pad.
Have your dogs nails trimmed every three to four weeks.
Know that Cocker Spaniels are prone to health problems including cataracts (a cloudy area in the lens of the eye), glaucoma (increased fluid pressure inside the eye) and patellar luxation (dislocation of the kneecap). They can also be prone to hip dysplasia (a malformed ball and socket in the hip joint) and allergies.
A mutured Cocker Spaniel will reach 15 inches in height. Female Cocker Spaniels reach about 13 to 14 inches at maturity. Both will weight between 24 and 28 pounds.
The average life expectancy is 12 to 15 years of enjoyment.
A Cocker Spaniel that is well cared for will provide many years of enjoyment and true companionship for the entire family. By carefully checking your dog on a regular basis you will be able to easily spot any thing out of the norm in order to take corrective action. Best time to check your dog is while grooming. The daily brushing is good place to start.
