Hot Rod Build Tips For Your Vehicle Project
If you are an avid fan of DIY and like to fabricate automobile body parts yourself, here are some tips for you:
- Prior commencing any painting work, you need to seal the seams on the body of your project. Any seams that are visible should be sealed for a smoother appearance and give protection from rust and water. To waterproof the seams, apply three quarters of duct tape onto the lap side or upper edge, roughly 1/16th after the drop off point. Shift the duct tape back 1/8th – 3/16th of an inch on the overlapped portion. Then, with the 3M 8300 sealer, cut the tip to get a 1/8th bead. Let it flow smoothly and finish with lacquer thinner for an extra slick, then peel away the tape one foot at the time when it is done. It is ready to be primed and painted after one hour.
- If you want to install a Dynamat in your vehicle, attach aluminum tape on top of all overlaps available. With this, the sticky black backing will not get on your clothes or skin when you are at work.
- Before mocking components (e.g. A/C box), use tape to cover all outlets and inlets so that grinding grit and dust will not enter the chamber. Or else, it will give you tedious work in removing the debris.
- When paint stripping is in process, you need to seal the innermost panel from the outer with aluminum foil tape so that the worn paint as well as stripper will not enter and get trapped in the internal structure. Place the tape over any openings too. You can use scotch brite disc to clean the paint down to bare metal where it is covered by tape for finishing.
- Tape masking tape behind your body worked fender so that it will be clean during priming and lets you not focus on too many parts at a time for the ultimate review.
- When you are doing final polishing, cover the entire vehicle with plastic and then seal all openings with tape to prevent polishing compounds from accumulating in the gaps.
- If you want to tweak moldings, do not use metal tools, as they will be damaged. Use a plastic stick with a wide blade or a spreader instead.
- In the painting of small parts, you can stabilize the parts by the use of 1/8th to one quarter inch hooks. To prevent the hooks from swaying when the spray guns are in use, tape them at the top of the rack and you will have a smoother paint finish.
- When attempting to paint emblems between the lines, make use of a flow pencil. It gives a great effect.
