Comment on Editorial: Humiliating punishment of 12-year-old out of line (Denver Post)
The first thing I noticed is that the author(s) of the editorial didn't even
have the guts to put this opinion under their personal by-line(s).
How is this not yellow journalism?
My title/caption for the original story would have been "Consequences, pass it
on" as a play on the Foundation for a Better Life ad campaign.
What follows is a bit of a novella, so I'll just say here, Joseph Gonzalez was
100% in the right on this, if you want the gist of my point. If you're

The AP article paraphrases Florida psychologist James Huysman, contends
"children don't gain insight from such a public atonement."
I don't entirely agree. The punishment has intrinsic instructive value. For
example, people who receive stiff fines or community service sentences for
whatever infraction they committed usually never want to go through something
like that again once its done especially if the punishment is beneath their
estimations of their own diginity.
Having esteem and respect for one's self along with a dignified carriage is
one of the many lessons that Jose Gonzalez will hopefully take away from this
experience.
