Why is an original painting worth so much more than a good copy?
The purpose of a painting or other work of art is to enjoy looking at a beautiful picture.
So if a very good copy of a famous painting is made, why is it less valuable than the original? If only an expert can tell the difference, then couldn't a person enjoy the copy as much as the original?
Why is such a big deal made out of detecting a forgery? Why is an original worth millions of dollars but a copy is worth almost nothing?
With an original painting, you clearly see the brush strokes and colors the artist used. Often it takes on more of a glow. With old oil paintings with many layers of varnish, they often have to be restored because the varnish is hiding the original work. Although most well made copies can come close to capturing the original colors of the artist, the newest color dyes cannot duplicate them exactly. Also, the brush strokes are also obviously not as clear as in the original and do not have the same texture. Some copies a well cdone and are often priced accordingly. Others are not much more than a poster but can be still enjoyed. After all, we might love a specific a Van Gogh work but most of us cannot afford to buy the original piece. Some of them perhaps do not look at the work as a beautiful piece but just an object. That is a pity when it could be appreciated by others who love art. I am sure others could come up with a better analogy.
When it comes down to it, value is in the eyes of the beholder. I can thoroughly enjoy and value a good copy of a Van Gogh on my wall knowing that I cannot obviously afford the original. I however would rebel if I had the money and was offered a copy of a Van Gogh at original prices...not that that is ever going to happen... lol
