We will return to the importance of the textual transmission of knowledge below but must first emphasize that the perceived authenticity of Peljor's work is not only derived from accurate copying. His connections with the past are affirmed in the use of a particular style for the Three Kings. He was a dexterous exponent of the Menri, a style which is recognizable to those who know the history of Tibetan painting and can compare it to other styles, such as the Karma Gadri. Noticeably Menri elements in his Ihree Kings are the densely packed composition with figures occupying most of the space (whereas in the Karma Gadri style large areas of open space are usually left around the central figures) and the colour range, with intense orange hues juxtaposed to turquoise blue in the background. Jampa, on the other hand, had employed a more realist palette in his work, with colours much more closely emulating the visible world. Thanks to the absence of any hint of realism (whether Socialist or not), Peljor's painting successfully eclipsed Jampa's and gained official and popular approval, but the use of the Menri style for this high-profile commission reveals the degree of invention behind the 'tradition' of Dharamsala visual culture. We should understand the history of Tibetan arts and culture since it was an important part of

.The Menri has been chosen to become the 'house style' of Dharamsala in preference to all other styles from the history of Tibetan painting and key individuals, such as Rigzin Peljor, have been entrusted with the task of ensuring that the use of this style is preserved and proliferated.
The removal of Jampa's Three Kings from the iconography of exile points to the larger question of which image of Tibet has been promoted and what kind of Tibetan culture has gained ascendancy since 1959. Jampa's work was replaced by a painting which conformed to the traditions of the Tibetan past and which the guardians of Tibetan heritage in the capital of the neo-nation in exile could sanction. In contemporary English the word 'tradition' refers to the transmission of beliefs, customs and practices from generation to generation, but earlier usage was closer to the Latin source meaning to 'hand over' or 'deliver'. When applied to the transfer of objects, 'tradition' had legal connotations, and hence it shares a root with the word for betrayal or breach of trust: treason. In fourteenth-century English, 'treason' was construed as the violation of allegiance to a sovereign or state, which could include simply imagining the death of the king. The close association between 'tradition/ and 'treason' has resonance in the Tibetan exile situation, where to deviate from tradition can lead to the accusation of forging a terrible breach with the trusted past: of breaking the bond with Tibet. Those who dare to remake the image of Tibet in any way other than the traditional must risk the opprobrium meted out on the treasonous. Just as imagining the death of the king was a treasonous offence, outlawed by Edward III in England, so envisaging a different Tibetan world can be a dangerous undertaking for an artist in exile.
