Libya Beyond Gaddafi! A New Beginning Might Be
September saw massive changes in Libya as the rebels backed by NATO stormed Tripoli and the compound of Col Gaddafi was overrun by the rebels. This sweeping of the capital took everyone by surprise as everyone has expected a Stalingrad in the desert contrary to all expectations the rebels takeover of Tripoli was shocking. The rebels however claimed more than what they achieved the arrest of Saif al Islam which was claimed by the rebels was a major embarrassment for the National Transitional council based in Benghazi as the son of the Libyan leader emerged only hours later at the Hotel where Journalists were with cell phone in hand he looked calm. The overrunning of the Bab Al Aziza compound by the rebels the next day helped them to save face. The Libyan rebels have been on the offensive and are trying hard with to fight Gaddafi .
The Libyan quagmire is exactly what the west fears and thus the all-out effort to get Gaddafi and his sons because control of Tripoli is not enough in itself to gain control of Libya. The west if it does pour troops into Libya to protect its investments in the rebels would end up losing far more in blood in treasure than it would gain. The initial enthusiasm after the rebels swooping of Tripoli has ended and the NTC the rebels governing body recently decided to remain in Benghazi and only partially relocate to Tripoli because of the security situation in the Libyan capital this war is still far from over. The Gaddafi regime is gone and is alive but despite the massive propaganda effort to try to demoralize Gaddafi supporters by western Media outlets the fight in Libya is still far from over.
The future however of Libya would remain uncertain. Libyan rebels are not a unified army that has swept the country, it is instead a rag tag militia united only by their opposition includes a very diverse for example the rebel commander in Tripoli is a long time Islamist the leader of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group of LIFG which has opposed the Gaddafi regime for a long time. The leader is a former justice minister in Gaddafi's cabinet thus the fact that Western nations are already beginning to worry about the huge quantities of weapons in the hands of these rag tag militants the lack of central authority was made blatantly clear by the execution of the Supreme rebel commander Abdul Fatah Younas on the 24th of July highlighted the inner divisions between the rebels themselves.

Leaked documents showed that the NTC had promised France access to 35 percent of Libya's oil in return for French support and although both the French and Libyans deny this it is hardly a conspiracy theory that barring a quagmire the Libyan adventure has been and will continue to be a profitable enterprise for the nations involved .
Years of Western sanctions and underinvestment in the oil sector has meant that oil per war production of 1.6 million barrels a day is not the cap and that oil production would rise greatly as soon as things begin to settle down. Libya fell short of expectations," said Jim Burkhard, managing director of global oil supply research associates. Still Burkhard said reaching three million barrels a day in 10 years "is in the realm of possibility."Such a massive potential and the fact that Libya has the largest known reserves in Africa with billions of barrels of oil still untapped and analysts hoping for even more as of yet undiscovered reserves.
The fight rages in Libya and according to current prices Libya which makes around 55 billion dollars a year off of its oil could be in the range of 100 billion plus within the next decade. That, however, is only going to happen if a strong government of national unity is formed which does not seem to be happening right now. The rebels have thus far not offered any amnesty to anyone and seem to be determined to put everyone on trial including the whole Gaddafi family and all regime supporters. They have only promised free and fair trials to everyone and well of course it does not need any emphasizing just how free or fair they would be considering that the rebels have been hell bent on revenge. It is precisely the fear of such show trials as that of Hosni Mubarak in Egypt that supporters of the regime are fighting hard against the rebels; unlike as in the case of Hosni Mubarak in Egypt where it is only the former tyrant who is on trial.
In Libya things are different; however, here the regime is being toppled by not peaceful protests but a mass rebellion and NATO bombings. So the Libyan first family and all supporters of it like the army,civil service so on and so forth fear facing the wrath of the rebels as happened in Iraq where former Baath party members have been barred from office and it was his ostracized army that led the insurgency. The West and rebels both risk an insurgency if they try to remake the Libyan state from scratch as has been done after World War II in Germany and Japan or a sadder examples of postwar Iraq and Afghanistan where keeping the former elites out of office is precisely the reason why such strong insurgencies developed in those countries.
