How do I even start?
I am a 25 year old male who is 5'11 and 255lbs. I am badly out of shape and I joined planet fitness and today will be my first day. I wear xl-xxl large shirts and a 42 inch waist and those 42's are starting to get really snug on me. I have heart problems in my family and my dad just had a quadruple last year and I have a 5 month old daughter that I need to care for and she needs me. So I am determined to do this. I just dont know how someone like me would start.
I lack in energy, I run out of breath quickly, I work in an office. And I am just downright out of shape. I want to at least get down to 200 which will be 55lbs.
I have heard people tell me just to walk, or free weights, or cardio, etc. I need some experts from the fitness buffs out there.
Here a few steps/suggestions to get started.
1. See your doctor. This is probably the most important thing to do before starting a lifestyle change; the doctor should be able to identify any underlying conditions that may effect an exercise regime.
2. Start slowly. Try not to increase your activity level by more than 10% per week to avoid injury.
3. Mix cardio and weight training. Both are necessary components to getting fit. You may want to hire a trainer for a few sessions so that you can learn proper form (again this helps avoid injury).
4. Change your diet. Diet and fitness go hand in hand; you will not lose weight if you have a bad diet. Try writing a food journal for a week and then evaluate your habits to start making lifestyle changes.
5. Get your family involved. If everybody in a household is trying to have a healthy lifestyle then it will make it easier to lose weight in the long run. It also can be a family bonding experience (i.e. going outside to play tag, football, baseball etc instead of watching tv).
